Organization Diversity Policy (2010)

Inspired by Chief Justice Hassell’s commitment to diversity, the LGA Board of Directors recently formalized what it has long been doing in practice. At the LGA Board meeting on January 14, 2010, it adopted the following “Statement of Diversity Principles”:

The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia (“LGA”) was organized in 1975 to support and provide educational opportunities for city, county and town attorneys around the state. The LGA is committed to fostering diversity within the ranks of its membership, as well as in the legal profession generally.

With greater diversity, the LGA can be more creative and effective, bringing varied perspectives, experiences, backgrounds, talents and interests to the practice of law and the camaraderie of the LGA. Furthermore, a diverse group of talented legal professionals is critically important to the success of every local government law department.

We believe that all local government attorneys in Virginia should participate equally and fully in our organization. To this end, we pledge to promote diversity in our membership and in the elevation of attorneys to leadership positions within our organization. And as we engage in activities on behalf of the LGA, we will continue to ask what more the LGA can do to ensure that all local government attorneys in Virginia are served by the LGA.
