THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ATTORNEYS OF VIRGINIA’S A. ROBERT CHERIN AWARD annually honors an outstanding deputy or assistant local government attorney whose distinguished public service reflects a personal commitment to the highest ethical and professional principles and enhances the image of local government attorneys in the Commonwealth.
GEORGE McANDREWS HAS SERVED IN THE ALEXANDRIA CITY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FOR OVER 26 YEARS, representing the City’s Police, Fire, and Sheriff’s Departments, Risk Management, the Mental Health Department, and the Department of Community and Human Services — where George passionately advocates for the best interests of Alexandria’s children. As the most experienced and skilled litigator in the office, George has successfully tried many complex cases in federal and state courts. His professional demeanor and extensive preparation have won the respect of judges and the defense bar alike. Among his adversaries, George is known as a fair but formidable and tenacious opponent.
DESPITE GEORGE’S SUBSTANTIAL CASELOAD, he is always ready to shoulder additional work in order to help a colleague. George has been an active mentor and role model for every lawyer in the Alexandria City Attorney’s Office.
GEORGE’S INVOLVEMENT WITH LGA has included serving as a board member from 2012 through 2017 and holding the offices of secretary, treasurer, and vice president. George has also served on multiple LGA conference committees — chairing the Fall 2012 committee, and assisting with the Spring 2008 and 2010 conferences. In addition, he has been chair of the Finance and Pro Bono committees, vice chair of the Ethics committee, and a member of the Amicus and Publications standing committees and numerous ad hoc committees.
GEORGE HAS UNSELFISHLY DEDICATED ENDLESS HOURS TO HIS COMMUNITY — as a mediator with the Fairfax Circuit Court, as the liaison to the City’s employees’ credit union, as a moot court advisor for area law schools, and as an alumni admissions interviewer for Georgetown University. George has served as a member of the Public Guardian and Conservator Advisory Board since 2014, a role that is instrumental in guiding programs for public guardians and conservators of indigent and incapacitated adults. George’s expertise in the area of guardianship led to his appointment to an interdisciplinary network of guardianship stakeholders. Convened by the Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice, this group works to improve judicial processes and public education to ensure guardian accountability.
GEORGE’S COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE extends beyond the legal realm. He is an active church member, serving as a lector and regularly preparing food and delivering meals to homeless shelters and the elderly. For over ten years, George has held numerous positions within his community homeowner’s association.
THE LGA BOARD OF DIRECTORS RECOGNIZES THAT GEORGE McANDREWS has exemplified a personal commitment to the highest ethical standards and professional principles, and has served the public in a way that enhances the image of all local government attorneys.
THEREFORE, as a public commendation by his peers of his personal commitment to, and professional achievement in, local government law, the legal profession, and his community, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, Inc., on this 20th day of April 2018, is honored to bestow the 2018 A. Robert Cherin Award for an Outstanding Deputy or Assistant Local Government Attorney upon GEORGE A. McANDREWS.
