The Associate University Counsel will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section and the University Counsel, and will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to Norfolk State University, located in Norfolk, Virginia.
DUTIES: This individual will provide legal services to the University, chiefly on matters that are transactional in nature: contracts, procurement, real estate, intellectual property, etc. As part of a two-attorney office, the individual may also be asked to handle a range of legal issues related to higher education, including without limitation, employment law, student-related issues, and policy development and review. This individual also should be able to provide training on legal issues to college personnel and be prepared to appear in the appropriate state or federal court as necessary. This individual also must be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion and work in the evening on occasion. Occasional travel also is expected. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the University Counsel and the Office of the Attorney General.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion. A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. Experience in transactional matters, higher education, or representation of State agencies preferred. Admission to the Virginia State Bar is required.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience and education.
