LGA Pro Bono Committee

Mission statement

Assume leadership responsibility for and develop ways to implement, with approval of the board of directors, the LGA's policy guidelines regarding the pro bono services role of LGA members.

At the LGA 2008 Spring Conference, the LGA Pro Bono Committee released a 57-page compendium of information about and for the local government attorney's pro bono service, outlining a pro bono checklist, sources for exploring pro bono opportunities, examples of successful pro bono experiences, and an appendix featuring sevearl miscellaneous articles and rulres regarding pro bono publico service.     The Virginia State Bar's Access to Legal Services Committee's website contains resources for attorneys interested in pro bono opportunities, including information on training and volunteer opportunities, as well as links to various support services for pro bono lawyers.

    The Fairfax Bar Association's Pro Bono Program sponsors numerous pro bono projects and panels, many of which include training for volunteer attorneys. The website highlights many of their pro bono programs, explains how you can get involved, and provides support including information on free malpractice coverage, resource materials, and training for pro bono cases.

    The Metro Pro Bono Advocate is a semi-annual newsletter published by the Pro Bono Committee of the Richmond Bar. The site features highlights of pro bono activities in the metro Richmond area and lists many local pro bono programs and contact information for each.

    ProBono.net/VA is a joint effort of the Virginia Poverty Law Center, Blue Ridge Legal Services, and Virginia's legal aid programs. The site contains information on pro bono opportunities throughout Virginia, a Library of materials that includes pleadings and court forms, as well as training materials for pro bono attorneys. Additionally, there is a Group Listservs for easy exchange of information among attorneys.

    The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service is the national source of information, resources, and assistance to support the delivery of pro bono legal assistance. The site contains information on pro bono policies and rules, continuing legal education, library resources, and links to various pro bono volunteer opportunities.

    The Rural Pro Bono Delivery: A Guide to Pro Bono Legal Services in Rural Areas published by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service is a resource for legal services providers, bar associations and volunteer lawyer programs looking for ways to serve clients in rural areas.
