SEI Description and Dates
SEI DESCRIPTION AND DATES
JULY 20-Aug. 1, 2014
Delivering on Democracy: whether you are appointed, drafted, chosen, hired or just ended up where you are out of natural career progression, the responsibility for managing your locality and working with your elected body now rests squarely with you, and, if you're lucky, a few others. And all the decisions you make are subject to public input and scrutiny.
It can be rewarding; it can also be daunting. But you can get by with a little help from your friends. At the University of Virginia's Senior Executive Institute, you can interact with senior colleagues from other localities and learn from a team of instructors who specialize in the needs of local government leaders. And you can do it at the university founded by one of America's first senior government executives - Thomas Jefferson.
The Senior Executive Institute offers two weeks of intensive, interactive learning in a supportive culture. SEI is designed specifically for and by senior local government managers, and is held at U.Va.'s renowned Colgate Darden School of Business. The curriculum, designed by the faculty at U.Va.'s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, is varied; the faculty well grounded in the needs and concerns of the top local government executive, and the beauty of the area is unparalleled.
Participants explore leadership from both organizational and personal perspectives, with emphasis on the culture and structure of the Council/Manager form of local government. Participants and instructors compare and discuss differences between entrenched bureaucratic structures and organizational systems based on democratic values-among many other things.
Our aim is to send SEI participants back to their communities with the tools to help craft a healthy, flexible government and to be prepared to interact effectively and collaboratively with citizens.
As a participant in the program, you will have ample opportunity to hone skills and test strategies that can help you build a high performance government. You will also have the opportunity to discover more about your own leadership style through team exercises, feedback from peers, and time for introspection.
Please join other local government colleagues from around the globe on a powerful, practical exploration of the multi-faceted world of local government leadership.
Date: This 2-week program is traditionally run the last two weeks in July. It is held once a year.
